What is asymmetric carbon atom?

Q. What is asymmetric carbon atom?
Ans. A carbon atom which is bonded to four different atoms or groups is called an asymmetric carbon atom. The term asymmetric carbon atom is rather misleading.

It only means that a carbon atom is bonded to four different , groups and a molecule of the type lacks a plane of symmetry. Such a molecule is called asymmetric, that is without symmetry, presently, the term disymmetric or chiral molecules is frequently used for asymmetric molecules.
