proteins, peptide bond, importance of proteins, aminoacids

PROTEINS

Q.        What are proteins?

Ans:    Proteins are complex nitrogenous compounds of high
molecular weight formed in nature by condensation of large number of amino acids through peptide bonds.

Q.        How peptide bond is formed?

Ans:    The peptide bond is established by condensation of amino

group and carboxylic acid group with elimination of a water molecule i.e.,

Q. What is nature of peptide bond?

Ans:    They are polar bonds.

Q. What is total number of amino acids found?

Ans:    Twenty

Q. What are major functions of proteins?

Ans:    (i) They are fundamental components of all enzymes and

some of hormones.

(ii)       They are structural units of skin, bone & cytoskeleton.

(iii)     The dietry proteins are important energy sources of body.

(iv)      Immune defense system is composed of proteins.

Q. What is composition of amino acids?

Ans:    Amino Acids are composed of amino group, a carboxyl

group, a hydrogen atom and a distinctive side chain, all bonded to carbon atom.

Q. What is acid hydrolysis product of protein?

Ans:    Amino acids are generally obtained by hydrolysis of

proteins.

Q. On what factors the type of protein depends?

Ans:    The type of protein depends upon the number, type &

sequence of amino acids involved in its structure.
