Define atomic weight, molecular weight and formula weight.

Ans. Atomic Weight

The mass of the atom of an element relative to that of carbon as 12, is called the relative atomic mass or atomic weight. On the atomic mass scale, II = 1, 0 = 12, O = 16 and so on.

Molecular Weight
The mass of the molecule of a compound relative to the mass of carbon atom as 12. is called its relat ive molecular mass or molecular weight,
The terms atomic weight and molecular weight are still widely used although technically relative atomic mass and relative molecular mass are the correct ones and are now recommended by SI.

Formula Weight

The term formula weight is interchangeably used with molecular weight. The sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in a chemical formula, is referred to as the formula weight. Thus the formula weight of methane is 16.
